Is New Age in Massage Therapy? A Biblical Warning for Christians

If you've ever walked into a massage office and seen crystals on the shelves, Reiki certifications on the wall, chakra charts, sage bundles, or heard someone talk about "balancing your energy," you may have wondered:

Is massage therapy connected to the New Age movement?

The answer is both yes and no.

Massage therapy itself is not New Age. It is a hands-on healthcare profession based on anatomy, physiology, and the body's natural design. Therapeutic touch can reduce pain, improve circulation, decrease stress, and support healing. There is nothing in Scripture that condemns appropriate therapeutic massage.

However, many massage practices have become intertwined with New Age spirituality. As Christians, we must recognize the difference because God repeatedly warns His people not to mix truth with false spiritual practices.

The Enemy Doesn't Always Come Looking Evil

One of Satan's greatest strategies is deception.

The Bible says:

"Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light." — 2 Corinthians 11:14

Not everything that feels peaceful comes from God.

Not everything marketed as "healing" is from God.

Not everything labeled "holistic" is biblical.

Many New Age practices promise healing, peace, protection, clarity, or spiritual growth apart from Jesus Christ. That alone should cause believers to pause.

Jesus said:

"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." — John 14:6

He is not one source of spiritual healing among many.

He is the source.

Practices Christians Should Avoid

Reiki

Reiki teaches that a practitioner channels universal life-force energy into another person for healing.

This is not found anywhere in Scripture.

Believers are never instructed to channel spiritual energy, manipulate unseen forces, or transfer healing power through themselves.

Healing belongs to God.

The Holy Spirit is not an energy to be directed by human hands.

Crystal Healing

God created crystals.

He did not create them to absorb negative energy, raise spiritual vibrations, protect us, or heal us spiritually.

The moment we begin assigning spiritual power to created things, we move our trust away from the Creator.

Isaiah reminds us:

"I am the Lord; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to another." — Isaiah 42:8

Sage and Spiritual Cleansing

Burning sage to "remove negative energy," cleanse a room spiritually, or drive away evil spirits has become extremely common.

But nowhere in Scripture does God tell His people to cleanse spiritual darkness with herbs or smoke.

When believers encounter spiritual warfare, God tells us to pray, put on the armor of God, resist the devil, and stand firm in Christ—not perform rituals.

Chakra Balancing and Energy Work

Chakras come from Eastern religious beliefs—not Christianity.

The Bible never teaches that our spiritual health depends on opening, balancing, or aligning energy centers.

Our spiritual life is found in Christ alone.

Manifestation, Spirit Guides, Tarot, Oracle Cards, and Pendulums

These practices all have one thing in common:

They seek spiritual power, guidance, or knowledge apart from God.

Scripture could not be clearer.

"Let no one be found among you... who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft... Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord." — Deuteronomy 18:10–12

God's people have always been called to seek Him—not hidden spiritual knowledge.

Can Christians Receive Massage?

Absolutely.

Receiving a massage is no more sinful than receiving physical therapy or chiropractic care.

The concern isn't the massage.

The concern is what is being practiced during the massage.

Questions Christians should ask include:

• Is Reiki or energy healing being performed?

• Are crystals being used for healing?

• Is chakra balancing included?

• Is sage or spiritual cleansing part of the session?

• Is the practitioner encouraging meditation rooted in other spiritual beliefs?

If the answer is yes, wisdom says to walk away.

Why This Matters

Some Christians dismiss these concerns because they say,

"It's just for relaxation."

Or,

"I don't personally believe in it."

But Scripture never tells believers to participate in false spiritual practices as long as we don't believe them.

Instead, it tells us:

"Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them." — Ephesians 5:11

And,

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God." — 1 John 4:1

Discernment is not fear.

It is obedience.

My Journey

As a massage therapist, doula, and Christian, I know these conversations can feel uncomfortable.

Many practitioners offering these services genuinely want to help people. Their intentions may be sincere.

But sincerity does not determine truth.

Only God's Word does.

That is why I have chosen to build my practice differently.

I believe massage can glorify God without borrowing from spiritual practices He has warned us against.

Clients don't need energy work.

They need compassionate care, clinical knowledge, ethical touch, and ultimately, the hope that is found in Jesus Christ.

Final Thoughts

The New Age movement has quietly entered many corners of the wellness industry—including massage therapy.

As followers of Christ, we cannot simply accept every trend because it is popular or marketed as natural.

We are called to be discerning.

We are called to test everything against Scripture.

We are called to worship the Creator rather than the created.

If you have participated in Reiki, crystal healing, sage cleansing, chakra balancing, or other New Age practices, know this: the invitation of Christ is not condemnation but repentance, forgiveness, and freedom.

Jesus is sufficient.

He is our peace.

He is our healer.

He is our protector.

He is our hope.

"See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy... rather than on Christ." — Colossians 2:8

May we never settle for spiritual substitutes when we have the Savior Himself.
